The story behind it all – Mascis

Mascis Veronica

When owner Carson Mather was in college her roommate surprised her with an out of town guest. A black furball of a puppy she had found on the side of the road. Carson and her new puppy, Mascis became inseparable!

When Mascis turned 9 years old she was a vibrant and healthy dog. But shortly after her birthday Mascis became ill and passed away unexpectedly.

An autopsy showed Mascis suffered a cancer called Hemangiosarcoma. The cancer affects the lining of the heart and had rapidly spread to her lungs, causing her sickness to take her so quickly and unexpectedly.

After such a devastating loss, Carson and her husband Jim began researching what could have caused their loved one’s cancer. Their first thought was the chemicals in their home and changed to all natural cleaners and soaps. But then with the huge national recall on bagged pet food they began reading the labels on the pet food, they were still feeding their other pets. The label listed meat by-products, and tons of ingredients they couldn't distinguish. They wanted to know what they were feeding their pets. Their vet, Dr. Brian Lapham, suggested Dr. Pitcairn's book “Natural Health for Dogs   Cats”. After reading this book they decided to stop feeding the bagged food and began making homemade food for their pets. They enjoyed experimenting with recipes and noticed an immediate change in their german shepard/lab mix, Smokey. He had more energy. His coat was softer and shinier. Not to mention, he LOVED the food.

Over the years the Mather’s have shared their natural treat recipes with friends and family. So when they got the same question over and over: “When can we get more?!” Waggity Tail Bakery was born.

The Bakery's mission is to make “people food” for dogs, and to keep our recipes simple, natural, and healthy. We use ONLY natural ingredients, buying local and organic when possible, and sticking to just a handful of ingredients in each recipe.

In memory of Mascis, a portion of all profits will go to the Morris Animal Foundation’s Canine Cancer Campaign. You can learn more about the program here: http://curecaninecancer.org.
